ᛗ CHARACTER Name: Harry Mason Canon: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories ( THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THIS GAME BELOW. I can't avoid them. ) Brief Info:
A very ordinary dad man from a small American town whose name is Harry Mason, who loves his daughter very much, and is a writer.
He's in a car accident where he finds his daughter missing once he comes to, and then he goes on a search for her while suffering memory issues, and also getting trapped into a frozen hell world with monsters chasing him. Is it because he lives in Silent Hill???
Partially. But actually, the first bullet point is the premise of his personality and being: he is in reality a figment of his daughter's imagination manifested (potentially) to deal with the trauma of losing him when she was young. In her make believe reality, her dad never died and is actually trying to get to her, just like any hero would.
Harry doesn't know what he is, that he's dead, and basically acts like most people would when finding strangers living in his house, having a missing seven-year-old kid out there, and finding nothing makes sense around him. He is the ultimate dad man that does right by people.
He had a Press X to call for your kid button before Heavy Rain did it. SUCK IT!!!!
Vessel Type & General ideas:
So, Harry is a kind of tulpa, is the best way to put it--he's not real, though it's up to the player if they feel like some part of him ever was during the gameplay. What's important is that he doesn't know he's not actually the real Harry Mason, nor has he investigated his own identity close enough to realise how little he knows about himself! He was in a car crash, we're going to blame it on that, duh.
But part of being a tulpa is that he is deeply linked to Sharon Da Silva and Heather Mason--basically any equivalent to his daughter. With the tethers in this game, he's going to start adapting characteristics of their versions of him that they know, which cannot have any ill-adverse effects in this screwed up world at any point.
Given the nature of what Harry is, he's meant to be the ideal dad from the perspective of his daughter. Kind, especially considerate of women, but he's also got a temper that especially comes out when it concerns his daughter, but he can also generally be grumpy when he's in a bad mood that he doesn't come down from immediately. You know this man is packing dad jokes, and so he can be an adult to look out for younger characters if you're into that, but also, if he wasn't a figment of his daughter's imagination, he would be your every day idea of a person--he's going to be freaked out by most of the forms people have and be weirded out by 99% of all of your canons. Jesus Christ, why are some of you unhinged.
I would love for him to help with document work! Why are the kids writing all the info posts. He's not much of a fighter (he's the singular Silent Hill protag who doesn't use weapons I think??), but he may be inclined to help with other projects too, in time. Safety and security will be his priorities, but he's also just A Dad, so he won't be immediately jumping into projects. He should be grilling. :(
Anyone who has powers that might harm or disturb memories may have some terrible effect on Harry might be interesting. He's made by his daughter's mind, and I know that wraiths can feed on memories. Though I do want to play with him figuring out what he is in time, and also the fact that, in essence, a part of his daughter still exists inside him (because he is literally her mind dad). Which leads to...!
VESSEL TYPE. I'm sold on Chronomancer for Harry Mason, with a big focus on memories: being able to jump to places he's been, time locking environments, making a pocket space of a place Harry has been (like the frozen hell world). Also seeing memories only as they've been experienced (via time) through electronics like televisions, phones, cameras, etc.
His limitation is that he needs a cellphone or some kind of screen to work with for whatever he does. Also, he'll be able to work with his timeline/memories better than others. These powers won't be immediately available to Harry because how the hell does he now he can do these things, but they do echo the gameplay in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. B)
I don't see these powers being immediately useful, but if there can be a time when they can be used with the skills of others (artificers, illusionists, etc) to maybe create items that can supply useful resources (a container that will replenish a meal inside x amount times of day, etc), then I might be down for that!! Also, I think he'll have a limitation where he can't speed things up. He symbolises being stuck in the past. It's very wow, cool symbolism.
My 'which leads to' was the idea that his daughter's influence to protect him being so connected to his being would still be present, and can be a detriment as much as an aid. She puts him into a frozen time space whenever there's a chance of facing the truth of him, and so this would be a pocket space connected to him--either he gets put in there, or anyone that potentially harms him (directly or indirectly) might be put there. This is probably not useful information, I have just been vibrating about this ok.
sorry for all the words, this is actually the shorter version I wrote. 😭 I do plan to app and have spoken to Heather Mason and Sharon Da Silva's players about this, so this is a "hey is anyone interested in a dad man" check!! I am counting down the days until the next TDM....
Here's a picture of him if you've ever seen the OG Harry or even Sean Bean's Chris/Harry. dork.
